Research & Sponsored Programs
Supporting Research and Scholarship
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) supports faculty, staff and students in the creation and dissemination of new knowledge through ethical scholarship, research and creative activities. UNC Asheville’s ORSP is dedicated to providing quality pre-award support and compliance oversight for contracts and grants. ORSP will facilitate innovation, increase faculty agency, enrich student experiences, highlight faculty and student scholarly and creative achievements, and find creative solutions to the scholarly and creative needs of faculty to realize the Mission and Vision of UNC Asheville.
The ORSP reports to the Chief Research Officer. Activities of ORSP are designed to help faculty and to facilitate the overall grant process, while balancing the need for institutional and sponsor regulatory compliance. ORSP assists university investigators in preparing grant proposals, securing institutional approval for proposals, and submitting proposals for funding. ORSP also manages several programs to ensure compliance with federal regulations. Please use the navigation menu for more information on how ORSP can assist you.
Our mission is to empower faculty, foster novel and interdisciplinary research and creative activities and build a culture of scholarship based on trust, collaboration, communication, and shared purpose.
What does the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs do?
The ORSP reports to the Chief Research Officer and serves every faculty, staff, and student within every academic discipline and research / programmatic area. The Office provides support in pre-award, limited non-financial post-award administration, technology transfer, research compliance oversight and export controls.
“Research and Sponsored Programs” includes all research, scholarship, education, public service, and creative activity, regardless of discipline, and all funds applied for and/or awarded from outside the University as a Grant or a Contract or other Sponsored Agreement.
The ORSP is the only administrative unit authorized by the University to review and submit funding proposals, and negotiate the terms of grant and contract awards made to the institution. Any award made to the University may only be accepted by the Provost or Chief Financial Officer. It is the designated administrative unit to UNC Asheville’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The committees are charged with ensuring that research conducted at the University follows the requirements and guidelines set forth by federal, state and local governments for the protection of human subjects and the ethical use of animals
Please note: All proposals for external funding, regardless of dollar amount, must be reviewed by the ORSP a minimum of 5 days before the due date and have institutional approval prior to being submitted to a funding agency.
UNC Asheville reserves the right to reject an award if the project has not been properly routed and vetted by Administration prior to its submission.
