SUMMARY:Greenfest: Local Cloth - Intro to Shashiko Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join the Student Environmental Center for the Intro to Sashiko Workshop from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. in Highsmith Union\, Mountain Suite 229. Led by Asheville-based nonprofit Local Cloth\, this beginner-friendly class introduces participants to Sashiko\, a traditional Japanese stitching technique rooted in repair\, reinforcement\, and decorative design. \nDuring the workshop\, students will learn the fundamentals of Sashiko while practicing six different stitching patterns. Led by Asheville-based nonprofit Local Cloth\, this interactive workshop introduces participants to the tradition of Kawandi quilting while emphasizing creativity\, sustainability\, and reuse. \nKawandi quilts\, traditionally made by Siddhi women\, are unique in both technique and process—constructed entirely by hand and built from the outside in using small fabric scraps. In this workshop\, participants will create their own piece while learning about the cultural significance and sustainable practices behind this art form.
