Experiential Learning That Sets You Apart

Anthropology majors at UNC Asheville develop skills to engage in intensive, faculty-mentored research projects.  In courses like ANTH 225, students build their concepts of theoretical frameworks, learning how to combine theoretical perspectives with methodological approaches. In ANTH 336, students develop that framework through hands-on lessons in gathering, analyzing and interpreting ethnographic data for their Senior Research ethnography. With structured courses and close guidance from faculty, students can design and execute original investigations or build on their internship experience. These research experiences culminate in compelling outcomes—students present at regional conferences and national conferences (such as NCUR), co-author publications, and emerge exceptionally well-prepared for graduate school or research-driven careers.

My experience brought me to examine the social, economic, and cultural dimensions of various fiber arts, including weaving, crocheting, knitting, sewing, natural dyeing, and more. Engaging with a multitude of crafters from a wide spectrum of backgrounds contributed to my understanding of the intersections of craft, identity, and place.

Dr. Kelley encouraged me to sign up for the Southern Anthropological Society's student paper competition and to present at their annual meeting in Raleigh. Her encouragement, guidance, and support helped me to feel confident in myself as I took my first steps as an anthropologist out of the classroom and into the professional setting of the conference. Because of her help and encouragement, I was even able to win the SAS undergraduate paper competition that year.

Through UNC Asheville’s Undergraduate Research Office, Anthropology majors have exceptional opportunities to conduct original, faculty-mentored research—from experiences with local community outreach projects, or topics such as professionalism in policing, literacy outreach, fighting human trafficking and many others. Students can apply for research grants in the URCAP program to support their work and receive funding to present at regional and national conferences, including the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR). Students may publish their findings in the UNC Asheville Journal of Undergraduate Research, gaining valuable experience that prepares them for graduate school, medical and veterinary programs, and careers in research, healthcare, or conservation. The Undergraduate Research Office supports every step of this journey, helping students turn curiosity into real-world impact.
