Information for Residents

All First-Year students are required to live on campus for their first academic year, including dual-enrolled and early college participants. To apply for housing, you must have completed your Enrollment Form with the Office of Admission & Financial Aid.

Students may request an exemption to the first-year live-on requirement in the Forms and Agreements section of the Housing Portal if they meet one of the following criteria:

  • Reside with a parent or guardian within 30 miles of UNC Asheville (residency verification required).
  • Are married.
  • Over the age of 22.
  • Are a veteran.
  • Have children or dependents.
  • Other (additional documentation is required to support your request).
First-Year students can live in any of our residence halls, with the exception of the Woods or the Village*. Gardner Hall, located in the Village, is only available to first-year students.

To apply, log into OnePort, select “On Campus,” “Housing Portal,” and “Apply for Campus Housing,”  and choose the “New Student” button. Follow the instructions on each page and use the navigation button at the bottom of each page to progress to the next step. Once your application has been successfully submitted, you will receive a confirmation email to your UNC Asheville email address. You can update your housing application until room selection begins later this summer. After that, no further updates can be made to your application.

Note: A new version of Safari, released in September 2020, is not compatible with our housing software. Please use Google Chrome to complete your housing application and subsequent room selection.

Details and Deadlines

  • The priority deadline to submit your housing application is May 15.
  • Room selection for new students will begin July 1
  • The deadline to select a room is July 15.
  • First-time, First-Year students who do not self-select will be manually assigned to a space beginning August 1

In order to participate in room selection, all students must have a completed housing application on file. If you complete your housing application by June 25, you will receive an email from our office with your room selection time prior to July 1. Applications received after June 25 will be sent separate communication about Room Selection. Applications received after July 31 will be manually assigned to a space by our office beginning August 1.

Once you have selected a room, you will receive an email with your housing assignment and the name of your roommate, if one has already selected into your room. You can view your assignment and roommate information at any time by logging into OnePort, selecting “On Campus,” “Housing Portal,” “Profile Information,” and “View My Roommate(s).”

If you were under the age of 18 at the time you completed your housing application and did not have your parent/guardian co-sign your contract, you are ineligible to participate in room selection.

Once you have selected your room, you are bound to the terms and conditions of the Housing Contract. Any cancellation of your contract for an unapproved reason will result in a breach of contract.

Room Changes

You will have the opportunity to change your room until 11:59 pm on July 15. Room changes can be done in the Housing Portal (within OnePort) by selecting the “Change My Room” button. After the July 15 deadline, no room changes will be allowed until the official Room Change Request Period, which is usually 1-2 weeks after the start of the fall semester.

To assist you in choosing a roommate during room selection, you will be able to see student information (including name, age, and the answers to their roommate preference questions) of students who are already assigned to a space and/or suite. Please keep in mind that other students are going through the room selection process, and can assign themselves to any available space on campus that is open to them during selection. You can check your roommate/suitemate information at any time in the Housing portal.

Creating a Roommate Group

If you have another UNC Asheville student you wish to live with, you can create a Roommate Group. The benefit of a Roommate Group is that one person in the group can make the room selection for everyone who has accepted the invitation to join the group during room selection. It is recommended that the person with the earliest selection time be the one to select for the group.

Important information regarding Roommate Groups:

  • To invite someone to your group, the student must have already applied for housing.
  • You can only belong to one Roommate Group at a time.
  • When you are invited to join a group, you will get an email and must accept or decline the invitation. If you do not accept, you are not part of the group.
  • A Roommate Group does not guarantee you housing.
  • A Roommate Group does not hold a space for you with others in your Roommate Group.
  • During room selection, if you are part of a Roommate Group, you will only be able to see suites with enough room to accommodate your entire group.
  • If one person in the Roommate Group selects housing on their own, the rest of the group members will not be able to select housing and must leave the group.
  • First-year students cannot live in the Woods or the Village, so if you are in a roommate group with a new, incoming first-year student, you will not be able to select in those areas.

My College Roomie (MCR)

We have partnered with My College Roomie (MCR), a roommate finder/matching social media platform, to help you find a roommate and connect with other incoming students! Please be on the lookout for an email to your UNC Asheville email address, inviting you to join MCR. Once you join, you can begin searching for and finding new roommates or friends. Once you find a roommate and/or suitemates, you can then create a Roommate Group in your housing portal.

Note: finding a roommate on MCR OR creating a Roommate Group in the housing portal, does not guarantee placement with a specific person or group. You will still need to participate in room selection to secure on-campus housing.

Current residential students can apply for 2026-2027 housing beginning February 23.

To apply, log into OnePort, select “On Campus,” “Housing Portal,” and “Apply for Campus Housing,” and choose the “Continuing Student” button. Follow the instructions on each page and use the navigation button at the bottom of each page to progress to the next step. Once your application has been successfully submitted, you will receive a confirmation email to your UNC Asheville email address. You can update your housing application until room selection begins on March 17. After that, no further updates can be made to your application.

Note: A new version of Safari, released in September 2020, is not compatible with our housing software. Please use Google Chrome to complete your housing application and subsequent room selection.

Details and Deadlines

  • The application process begins on February 23.
  • All students with a completed application by noon on March 12 will receive an email with their designated selection time. Applications received after March 12 will be reviewed on a space-available basis.
  • Room selection time slots are assigned based on the date you complete your housing application and contract. Your selection time is your first and best opportunity to assign yourself to a room.
  • Room selection will begin on March 17. Students must select their room by 11:59 pm on March 31. Those who do not participate in the room selection will have their application canceled and will not be guaranteed housing for the 2026-2027 academic year.
  • Students who want to retain their current room can do so when they submit their application for 2026-2027. If you do not retain your current room at the time you apply, you will not be able to retain it later, so please consider your options carefully. Please note that some rooms are not eligible for retention.

Students will receive an email about their assigned room selection time and instructions for how to select a room assignment. The deadline to select your room is 11:59 pm on March 31

Once you have selected a room, you will receive an email with your housing assignment and the name of your roommate and suite mates, if there are students who have already selected into the available spaces. You can view your assignment and roommate information at any time by logging into OnePort, selecting “On Campus,” “Housing Portal,” “Profile Information,” and “View My Roommate(s).”

Once you have selected your room, you are bound to the terms and conditions of the Housing Contract. Any cancellation of your contract for an unapproved reason will result in a breach of contract. This includes those who have opted to retain their current on-campus room.
