Field Experience and Clinical Practice

Education students at UNC Asheville engage in immersive field experiences and clinical practice to translate educational theory into effective classroom instruction. Beginning early in the program and continuing through student teaching, candidates work alongside experienced educators in diverse classroom environments, including through partnerships such as AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), applying instructional strategies, classroom management techniques, and inclusive teaching practices in real time. Guided by close faculty mentorship and strong school partnerships, students graduate prepared to step confidently into their own classrooms.

AVID has helped give first-hand, real experience working with students in the classroom. As a person who was unsure about my career, this really helped me realize that I love working with students, and want to do this for a long time.

The Impact of AVID

Joining the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) community is one of the many experiential opportunities available to UNC Asheville Education licensure students. As AVID Tutors, students work directly with learners in Asheville City Schools, gaining hands-on experience with a proven methodology that has had a transformative impact on students and their families. Now international in scope, AVID has been part of Asheville City Schools since 1997, with UNC Asheville serving as a partner since 1999. AVID students have gone on to attend esteemed colleges and universities across the country — many earning scholarships — demonstrating the program’s lasting impact on college access and student success.

Becoming an AVID Tutor

UNC Asheville students serve as AVID tutors and play an integral role in the AVID curriculum in grades 6–12. Each year, approximately 80 tutors work in classrooms four days per week, facilitating small-group discussions connected to students’ core academic coursework. Tutors complete extensive training in AVID methodology and participate through paid positions or as part of the field component of EDUC 314. Many AVID tutors go on to become teachers in Asheville City Schools, across North Carolina, and beyond—including several UNC Asheville graduates who completed the AVID program as students themselves. To learn more about AVID or explore opportunities to get involved, contact teach@unca.edu

UNC Asheville students work as AVID tutors and are an integral part of the AVID curriculum in grades 6-12. Each year, 80 AVID tutors work with students in the classroom four days per week, facilitating small group discussions based on work students are doing in their core academic classes. Some tutors work in paid positions and others work to complete the field component of their Education 314 class. All tutors complete extensive training in AVID methodology.

Students in grades 6-12 and their families make up the core of the AVID program, and there are several opportunities each year for meeting with families to talk about AVID expectations, student successes, and how to help students prepare for college. At the end of each academic year, AVID sponsors a family and community banquet to honor gradating seniors and rising freshmen. Most AVID students will be the first in their families to graduate from a four-year college or university, and we are especially proud of our first generation of AVID students who have completed college.

Several of our AVID tutors, upon graduating from UNC Asheville, have continued to work with Asheville City Schools as teachers. Many former AVID tutors are now teaching across the state and beyond. We are excited to claim several UNC Asheville graduates who completed the AVID program in Asheville City Schools. If you are interested in learning more about the program or finding out how you may become involved, please contact us at teach@unca.edu or apply here.

In the past, UNC Asheville has sponsored campus visits for AVID students in Asheville City Schools and from AVID schools in our region. Students attend college classes, participate in workshops, tour campus, and experience what life is like on a college campus. Asheville AVID students have had the opportunity to participate in AVID Summer Bridge, an enrichment program focusing on the transition between middle and high school. You can check out the work created by students in the 2020 Summer Bridge session in the video, Through the Eyes of Revolutionaries.
