Undergraduate Research

Experiential Learning That Sets You Apart
UNC Asheville, a national leader in undergraduate research and founder of the National Council for Undergraduate Research (NCUR), offers Economics students opportunities to define, develop, write and present an economic research project. A good project will reflect knowledge of the relevant economic theory; demonstrate initiative in obtaining information; exhibit creativity and imagination (examples: a creative application of economic theory, an imaginative measure of a hard-to-quantify variable, or an insightful analysis of the limitations of a particular approach and useful suggestions for surmounting these limitations); and complete the task outlined in the topic statement. Students often publish and present their findings at conferences, and qualified sophomores, juniors, and seniors can join the program by attending a fall orientation. Participants may earn course credit (ECON 480) or, in some cases, a stipend through funded projects.

Through UNC Asheville’s Undergraduate Research Office, Psychology majors have exceptional opportunities to design and conduct original, faculty-mentored projects — from studying memory and decision-making to exploring developmental, social, and clinical applications of psychology. Students can apply for research grants to support their work and receive funding to present at regional and national conferences, including the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR). Many Psychology students publish their findings in the UNC Asheville Journal of Undergraduate Research, gaining valuable experience that prepares them for graduate study, professional schools, and careers in counseling, healthcare, education, or research. The Undergraduate Research Office supports every step of this journey, helping students turn curiosity into discovery.
