Our History

1993–1995

Founded in response to UNC Board of Governors mandate

Peg Downes (Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs) helped establish the CTL in 1994–95. Initially housed in a single office in Ramsey Library.

2004

John Myers joins; CTL moves to Highsmith University Union

John Myers, Instructional Technology Consultant, officially joined the Center, which expanded into a larger space in Highsmith.

2008

CTL relocates to Lipinsky Hall (2nd floor); TLTR opens in Ramsey Library

A separate unit, Teaching and Learning with Technology Resources (TLTR), directed by John Myers, opened in Ramsey Library.

January 2015

CTL returns to Ramsey Library

July 2017

TLTR staff merge into CTL

Expanded capacity while continuing existing programs. CTL housed in a ground-floor suite; learning circles and programs held in the Whitman Room.

2018

Faculty fellows program launched

Two faculty members serve two-year terms, with two selected each year.

January 2024

CTL moves to Zageir Hall (ZAG 134)

Shares ZAG 101 computer lab with the Department of Education. Future plans include a presence in the renovated Lipinsky Hall.

Eight faculty members have directed the CTL since its inception:

  • Spring, 1999 – Spring, 2002: Chuck Bennett, Professor of Physics
  • Fall, 2002 – Summer, 2004: Pat McClellan, Assistant Provost for Academic Administration
  • Summer, 2004 – Summer, 2010: Bruce Larson, Professor of Economics
  • July 1, 2010 – June 30, 2020: Melissa Himelein, Professor of Psychology
  • July 1, 2020 – June 30, 2021: Lyndi Hewitt, Associate Professor of Sociology & Anthropology
  • July 1, 2021 – June 30, 2023: Evelyn Chiang, Professor of Psychology, and Karen Cole, Professor of Education
  • July 1, 2023 – present: Katherine C. Zubko, Professor of Religious Studies and Anthropology
