The department courses and my experience writing for The Blue Banner taught me the fundamentals of reporting, newswriting, and media literacy, knowledge and skills essential for journalists to make judgment calls every day. Additionally, I developed a basic working knowledge of how our information environment and media ecosystem function, which I consider tremendously important regardless of whether or not you work in a newsroom, particularly as technology is upending and transforming the global landscape.
The more I move around the country and get to know other universities, the more I’m grateful for the curriculum and professors at unca, who taught me to be curious, dig deeper into issues, and put heart into my work. Also to meet people where they are and care about the communities I work and live in. UNCA and the mass communication department helped me understand the thing that still keeps me going – community and connection.
