UNC Asheville has added Women’s Flag Football, kicking off as a club sport in Fall 2026. With the sport gaining national traction, including as an NCAA emerging sport and its upcoming debut at the 2028 Summer Olympics, UNC Asheville is building a program designed to grow.

The University of North Carolina Asheville will host a Women’s Flag Football Prospect Day and Clinic on April 15, introducing prospective student-athletes to campus while building momentum around one of the fastest-growing sports in the country.

The event will begin with a University Preview from 1-3 p.m. at Highsmith Student Union, followed by check-in and a skills clinic from 3-6 p.m at the Outdoor Sports Complex. Participants may attend both the preview and clinic or choose to attend the clinic only.

The clinic is co-hosted with the Carolina Panthers, with support from the Big South Conference. Participants will take part in skill development drills, position instruction, and competitive play led by Carolina Panthers staff and UNC Asheville coaches.

“The Carolina Panthers are excited to partner with UNC Asheville to support the growth of Women’s Flag Football in Western North Carolina,” said Riley Fields, Director of Community Relations for the Carolina Panthers. “The sport is seeing unprecedented growth both in our region as well as nationally. UNC Asheville’s commitment to developing its Women’s Flag Football program is a significant step forward and will create new access and opportunities to the game for both high school students, as well as UNC Asheville student-athletes.”

“The Big South Conference looks forward to partnering with the University of North Carolina Asheville and the Carolina Panthers for this exciting Women’s Flag Football Clinic,” said Sherika A. Montgomery, Commissioner of the Big South Conference. “The sport of women’s flag football continues its meteoric rise at all levels of competition. We are especially excited about the intentional growth of the game in Asheville and throughout the greater Western North Carolina region. This expansion represents a phenomenal addition for young women at all levels of the sport—creating new pathways for participation, development, and achievement, while strengthening the connection between our institutions and the communities they serve.”

The event serves as an official recruitment opportunity and free skills clinic for female athletes currently enrolled in high school (9th grade and up) or current college student-athletes interested in developing their flag football skills and learning more about playing at the collegiate level at the University.

“Women’s flag football creates a powerful new space for students to lead, compete, and build community. This program is about expanding opportunity, honoring the momentum of women’s athletics, and ensuring that students see UNC Asheville as a place where their passion, talent, and ambition can advance in the classroom and on the field,” said Dr. Meghan Harte Weyant, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.

The prospect day and clinic reflect UNC Asheville’s commitment to expanding opportunities for women in athletics while positioning the University as a leader in the growth of women’s flag football across Western North Carolina.
