Physics at UNC Asheville offers students a dynamic and customizable path through its four distinct concentrations—Preparation for Graduate School, Applied Physics, Physics with Teacher Licensure, and Physics with Comprehensive Science Licensure. Each concentration begins with a robust core foundation, including courses like Physics I & II (PHYS 221, 222), Electronics (PHYS 310), and Modern Optics (PHYS 323). These concentrations cater to diverse academic and professional goals: whether you’re aiming for advanced studies, engineering-focused applications, or teaching credentials in physics or comprehensive science, UNC Asheville equips you with both the specialized knowledge and flexible support to excel.
Applied Physics
This concentration provides a solid background in basic physics while maintaining enough flexibility to allow students to prepare for immediate entry into industry or a government research laboratory.
Comprehensive Science Licensure
This concentration is coordinated with the Education department to provide licensure in all high school science curricula. Students who wish to receive teacher licensure should review requirements found in the Education section of the catalog and see the appropriate licensure advisor for additional information.
Preparation for Graduate School
This concentration is designed to prepare students for advanced studies in physics, providing them with opportunities to do research in areas of experimental or theoretical physics.
Physics with Teacher Licensure
This concentration is coordinated with the Education department to provide a student with teacher licensure in 9-12 Physics.
