Though I’m originally from Allentown, PA I’ve lived most of my life in Indianapolis, IN. I didn’t realize how much I missed the mountains until moving to Asheville, and I absolutely love living here. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and later earned my Master’s degree in Education from Indiana University with concentrations in adult education and instructional systems technology. I started my career in human resources but transitioned to career services and discovered that it was the field that I wanted to stay in.

I love helping students discover their passions and helping them learn how to make their dreams a reality. I am so excited to continue supporting students with their career exploration and development at UNC Asheville, as well as partnering with faculty to support their efforts to bring career education into the classroom. Outside of work, I love reading, hiking, and spending time with my two Newfoundlands. I highly value constant growth and learning, so my next adventure is trying to learn how to homestead.

Originally from New York State, I earned my Bachelor of Science in History with a minor in Women & Gender Studies from SUNY Brockport before completing my Master of Science in Higher Education at Syracuse University. Looking to get away from Syracuse winters, I applied sight unseen to UNC Asheville and have been here ever since.

I’ve been with the Career Center for 7+ years and have held multiple roles on the team. My current role is the Associate Director of Student Employment Development, where I oversee on-campus student employment. I hope to help make student employment even more of a high impact experience for students.

Outside of work, I can be found cuddling my cats while reading or listening to my husband explain Premiere League soccer.

Matthew Morency, LCMHC-A

Counselor

Email: mmorency@unca.edu

Matthew is an associate Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC-A) and earned his B.S. in Psychology from Virginia Tech and M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Western Carolina University.

Matthew draws from a range of therapeutic approaches, most notably Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Relational Cultural Theory, while tailoring his work to each student’s unique needs in a person-centered way.

He understands that the college experience can be both exhilarating and exhausting, and he believes in meeting students where they are. Matthew works collaboratively with clients to create a non-judgmental, supportive space where authenticity can emerge naturally. Through this process, he hopes to help students strengthen their connection to themselves and others, clarify their values, and build greater flexibility in navigating life’s challenges.

What is your favorite UNC Asheville memory?
“Numerous memories to choose from my time at UNC Asheville. I’ll lump some together and say just spending time with my various roommates and friends. Location or activity didn’t matter, just being together and building our little community.”

If you could give one piece of advice to incoming students, what would it be?
“Don’t be afraid to try new things. Be brave. From the little things like trying new foods, for me it was grapes, yes grapes, to the bigger things like studying abroad. You can experience these new things. You are brave.”

What was your favorite class while you were attending UNC Asheville?
“I truly enjoyed all but two classes I took during undergrad at UNC Asheville. Two classes always quickly come to mind for me; we had incredible discussions in my Humanities 214 course and we built incredible community in my Blue Banner course.”
